In 1910, there were few gas stations, few paved roads and no highway system.  But there were RVs. Through war and peace, booms and busts, fuel lines, fads and the cyber revolution, the RV lifestyle has endured and is still going strong, even in today’s challenging economic times.

Media Tour

On April 24, RV Historian David Woodworth (pictured above) wrapped up a successful media tour promoting the RV Centennial to media outlets across the eastern portion of the country. Over the course of his two-week tour, Woodworth participated in a total of 36 media interviews (24 television broadcasts, nine radio interviews and three print articles) and generated nearly 6 million impressions.

The tour began on April 12 with Woodworth participating in 16 television interviews via satellite from the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum in Elkhart with local network affiliates and cable channels across the country. Segments from the satellite media tour aired in an array of major media markets, including Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Seattle, Sacramento, and Milwaukee.  Woodworth enthusiastically described the joys of RVing and highlighted how RVs have evolved through the years, and also made sure to direct viewers to GoRVing.com for additional information.

With a 1916 Telescoping Apartment RV and a modern 2010 Fleetwood Discovery motorhome, Woodworth traveled to his first stop, Toledo, Ohio, where he did three television interviews with WNWO-TV (NBC), WTOL-TV (CBS) WTVG-TV (ABC) before heading for the Big Apple, where he landed a four-minute interview on national TV.

Appearing live on NBC's Weekend TODAY on April 17, Woodworth discussed the industry's Centennial with hosts Lester Holt and Amy Robach and showcased the antique RV and the new motorhome.

The type A motorhome by Fleetwood featured in the tour was selected in a lottery from among RVIA member manufacturers who responded.

David Woodworth received RVIA’s Spirit of America award at the National RV Trade Show in
Louisville last December for his nearly two decades of service promoting the industry’s rich history and its unique position as an icon of the American road trip.
